19 Nov (Friday). arrive in Auckland (evening).

Members of the group should plan to spend the night at a central hotel in Auckland for early morning departure. Students MUST arrive in Auckland on this day or before. If you arrive several days before this, try traveling north to the Bay of Islands. A number of simple bus trips can get you to Paihia, which is well situated for backpackers. Note that Auckland itself has quite a bit to offer, but can be expensive.



20 Nov (Sat). Assemble in Auckland
Meet at 8 AM. You should plan on staying at a youth hostel on Queen Street (see above). Topic: Auckland, Auckland city volcanoes.
1) Meet at Mercure Hotel (8 Customs ST.) with all bags at 08:00 AM, downtown in Auckland (lower Queen Street).
2) Load vans and drive to summit of One Tree Hill
3) Drive Auckland-Rotorua (4 hr). Arrive Rotorua at c. 5:00 PM.

Wellington fault, California Park. Wellington fault trace through Wellington and the seismic hazards of Wellington. Tour with IGNS geologists, seismic safety.
1) Depart 07:00, Drive to Wellington (c. 4 hr)
2) California Park - The Wellington fault in an urban landscape. Tour along fault and ends in Wellington. Modern seismic protection: Te Papa museum.
3) 4:00 to 6:00 Awesome Forces: Te Papa (downtown Wellington).
4) Dinner in Wellington. Depart Wellington at 8:30 PM
5) Evening: vans must be completely emptied and cleaned.

From Picton, Drive to Kaikoura.
1) Interislander Ferry - Wellington - Picton. We must arrive at the ferry terminal no later that 8:45 AM for the early departure.
