Land of Contradictions: Manaus and the Amazon

By Orly Amir

Manaus and the Amazon jungle were contained contradictions.  The sights, people and ways of life that we saw all confuse me as to what these areas really are.  Each place has components that contradict other ones.

"Curandeira"  She sells herbs and roots in the Manaus public market.  People come to her to prevent and cure illnesses.

Amazonian Nature Healing

By Havi Asch

I am very interested in herbal and natural remedies that are found in the Amazon region.  This interest is rooted in having grown up with a mother who is very involved in natural and homeopathic healing.  I feel a strong connection with home-grown natural remedies that aren’t prescribed or purchased.

A Visit to the SONY Manaus factory in the Manaus (Amazonas) "Free Trade Zone"

Manaus (Manáos) is situated on the north side of the Rio Amazonas just below the point where the Rio Negro and Rio Solimões combine. The city has long served as the focus for Brazil's North, a vast region covered largely with tropical rainforest (selva). Significant precipitation falls throughout the year, allowing the broadleafed trees to retain their leaves (making them evergreen as opposed to deciduous).

Visiting the SONY Manaus Factory

We have been studying about women's roles in Brazil's economic development and on November 9th visited an electronics factory in Manaus.  Imagine a modern electronics factory right in the middle of Brazil's Amazon.  In this plant about 68% of the workers are women.

As our SONY guide explained, women are especially well suited to electronics assembly work:  Their hands are small and nimble.

Another picture outside the modern factory building.

SONY welcomed us graciously and provided a tour of the plant as well as a power point presentation on SONY organizational structure and operations.

No pictures could be taken inside the plant with the exception of the ones below where we were treated to sandwiches and cakes after the day's activities.

These digital photos were taken by Alexandre Kadota of SONY Brazil.

SONY's motto is "Think Outside the Box"
